Vijay Raut: “Born into a family of artists, Ranjith Raghupathy tries to reimagine the world around
him by blending modern techniques of abstract expressionism with tribal and tantric
subject matters.
It’s not difficult to see the influences of South Indian culture reflected in his intensely
rhythmic watercolour, acrylic, oil, and charcoal works. Having been born in
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, his earliest pieces translated the struggles of everyday
mundane life onto the canvas, leading him to pursue bold abstract art as a device to
express meaning within the meaningless.
His White Series showcases his fondness for loose, fluid, figurative sketches. Very
evocative of Egon Schiele’s twisted expressiveness while retaining his unique emphasis
on transparency.
Raghupathy is heavily inspired by Francisco Goya and Ganesh Pyne, who undoubtedly
influence similar themes of melancholia in his work. He combines this with a drive for
novelty and experimentation, which forbids him from repeating themes, colours, and
even strokes to constantly explore the unknown.
Ranjith Raghupathy was born in 1974 and currently lives and works in Pune, India. He
graduated with a Fine Arts degree from Kerala University and was first featured in the
1993 State Level Exhibition of Arts in Kerala soon after finishing his education. Having
been an art teacher for the better half of 18 years, he has used his art to instruct as
much as capture the dreams, sensations, and feelings of everyday individuals around
him.
His recent exhibitions include the Colours of life(Group Show – 2023) at the Cymroza
Art Gallery, Mumbai; Urban Myths(A group show by the Nero Art Gallery – 2022) at
Bikaner House, New Delhi; Group show (2022), at Abir Art Space in Ahmedabad.”
